The climbing area surrounding Refugio Emilio Frey comprises two valley amphitheaters separated by a shallow col that are crowned by some thirty spires of very solid, orange granite. The emerald color water of Laguna Tonček tops the cake. It is an unforgettable setting. The climbing as described by visitors is “excellent and often outrageously excellent”. Most routes are trad, at times with bolts mixed in, often topping out on narrow summits that offer breathtaking views of the Patagonian Andes. During the summer months this is a climber’s paradise of sorts. The towers are 20 to 250 meters high and offer over 500 routes comprising 2.000 pitches.
It is a complete guidebook to the area, describing every peak and climb. The text includes general information, history, approaches, route descriptions, recommended gear, strategy and descents.
