The first edition differed significantly from Maurizio Oviglia's previous works, particularly Pietra di Luna, which is considered by many to be the "bible" of climbing in Sardinia. Baunei Sportclimbing actually marked a radical departure from these earlier works, moving away from the 15x21 format to a smaller, more "pocketable" 12x17 format, similar to the early and legendary guides by Michel Piola on Mont Blanc. Gone were the stories, long descriptions, and large photographs, replaced by concise and essential descriptions in the style of the latest generation of climbing guides. This was a controversial choice and not particularly appreciated by fans of the old Pietra di Luna, but it found favor with many climbers who appreciated the affordable price (compared to other guides in the field) and the pocket-sized format. This guide was also the first in Sardinia and beyond to feature drone photos (taken by Paolo Contini) showing access routes and climbing lines. It should be noted that the guide only covers sport climbing crags, while Baunei’s territory is best known for its multi-pitch routes.
Oviglia partially addressed this in 2020 with the second edition, which featured a beautiful and captivating cover. In this edition, some multi-pitch routes on the more popular cliffs of Pedra Longa, Punta Su Mulone, and Aguglia were added, though they were still described in a very minimalistic way.
The 2025 edition, released on November 13, 2024, required an increase in page count to 168 to include all the new developments in an area that is becoming one of the most popular climbing destinations in the world. While maintaining a focus on sport climbing, the guide now includes multi-pitch routes at Punta Giradili and the South, North, and East faces of Punta Su Mulone. However, major cliffs such as Argennas, Ginnircu, and Oronnoro are still excluded. The routes on Aguglia di Goloritzè and Pedra Longa have been updated, as these are now highly frequented year-round.
In addition to this, there are other updates: larger fonts, QR codes with coordinates for crags and parking areas, and information on the year of bolting and any re-bolting. This information is particularly important, as many of these crags are near the sea, where the type of rock and the year of bolting are crucial. These updates led the author (who is also the publisher of the book) to consider separate editions, one in Italian and one in English. The price has increased by only 3 euros, from 15 to 18 euros, compared to the 2020 edition.
